How to Make Paper Mache Easter Eggs

This may be a time-consuming activity, but this will produce perfectly cute results.  Let us begin making Easter eggs!

Step 1  Prepare all the materials needed for this tutorial

Step 2:  Pour a considerable amount of white glue into the bowl.

Don’t be bashful with the amount you use! If you underestimate what is needed, you can always make a new blend.

Step 3:   Pour water into the bowl.  The ratio of white glue to water should be 3:2.

This is a great time to get the kids measuring. If you use an entire bottle of white glue, just look at the ounces to determine the proper amount of water needed. The kids can even help with the math!

Step 4:  Stir the mixture until homogenized.

You need to make sure it is homogeneous for the process to work well.

Step 5:   Cut small strips of newspaper and put it on the glue mixture.

If you don’t want to spend time cutting, have the kids rip strips of newspaper.

Step 6:   Completely submerge the newspaper strips on the mixture for a better mache mixture.

Being stingy with the glue mixture will result in a less than optimal finished product.

Step 7: Completely cover the plastic eggs with the glued paper strips.

Continue doing this until you achieve the thickness of the mache layers you desire. The more layers, the stronger the finished product.

Step 8:   Let the eggs dry for a day or two.

Once the drying process is done, the eggs will be as hard as the rock. If they aren’t hard or still feel tacky, let them keep drying!

Step 9:   Using a cutter, carefully cut the midsection of the egg.

An X-Acto knife is perfect for this task. Older kids may do this with adult supervision while younger kids will need to just observe an adult.

Step 10:   Remove the egg mache on the egg plastic.

Patience goes a long way at this step so you will preserve the egg shape.

Step 11:   Cut a long strip of newspaper and use this to seal the egg mache together.

Use white glue for this.  Smooth out the sides of the new strip, so that the sealer strip wouldn’t be obvious.  Let it dry for 5 to 6 hours.

Step 12:   Paint the eggs.

Do a double coating for better results.

Step 13:  Paint various designs on the egg.

This is where everyone’s creativity can shine. Go for the colors and designs that most appeal to you.
